Young campaigners outrage at unpaid overtime - Youth Fight for Jobs calls for job creation not slave labour
Paul Callanan, Youth Fight for Jobs, National Organiser says: "It is outrageous that at a time when 2.5 million people are out of work, 1 million of them under 24, bosses are using the current workforce to get jobs done on the cheap. If the practice of unpaid overtime was ended then work could be shared out.
The government should force bosses to take on new staff for extra work.
Some companies will claim they don't have enough money to do this. In case we say prove it - open the books to show where the money has gone. If executives have enough money to pay themselves inflated salaries then they can pay workers for the jobs they do. If companies don't do this then they should be taken into public ownership to end slave labour practices and create jobs.
What we won't accept is workers and unemployed being made to pay for bosses failures through slave labour and unemployment. Youth Fight for Jobs will fight this every in inch of the way in order to give a future for young unemployed and working people"
Youth Fight for Jobs was launched on 2009 in response to rising levels of youth unemployment. We have recently completed the 330 mile Jarrow March for Jobs. We were backed by the Unite, PCS, RMT, CWU, UCU, FBU, Bectu and TSSA trade unions.
