Construction workers fight pay cuts
Youth Fight for Jobs members were out around the country today joining protests of construction workers battling a 35% pay cut. 7 Construction industry employers are attempting to force their workers to sign new contracts which would include this massive pay cut. Today was named as a day for strike action at Balfour Beaty (one of the seven) before the company won an injunction in the courts to halt the action. But in many areas unofficial strike action went ahead anyway.
Electricians (sparks) were also asking why apprenticeships have been cut, why there is a race to get jobs done cheaply and quickly regardless of safety, and why were there a million unemployed young people when construction companies made millions of pounds profit.
